Affirmations in Anorexia Recovery

My daughter recently told me that when she was recovering from anorexia, my consistent affirmations about food and her future happiness really helped her. Even when she didn’t seem to listen at the time, these regular reminders did sink in and have stayed with her.

Here are some ways affirmations can support recovery:

Food is medicine. Reminding your child that food is the only way that recovery can take place can shift the focus from fear to purpose.

Nourishment restores the brain and body. Consistent eating rebuilds strength, energy, and good habits, which are all vital for long-term recovery.

Daily reassurance that they will be happy with their body when recovered can help your child to trust you and not the illness.

Repetition builds reassurance. Even when it feels like your words aren’t making a difference, hearing the same messages over time helps challenge the illness’s voice.

Recognise every effort, each meal, each bite, as a success.

Stay calm and hopeful. Your belief that recovery is possible will provide you with the motivation and patience during the recovery period.
